The short answer is: yes.

But the other short answer is: you should live wherever your heart desires.

For the purpose of this article, I’m referring to Williamsburg near the waterfront. The North Side.

I’ve been living in or around the area for about eleven years (I lived in Bushwick for four years, relatively nearby). Now, I live within walking distance of the Bedford avenue L stop, the first in Brooklyn when you ride the train from Manhattan. While I wasn’t living in the neighborhood in the days when it was sleepy, I’ve still seen some things change (I was here before the Whole Foods opened on Bedford avenue!). Even in the last ten years, I can’t believe how crowded it is (at times), and fancy. The options of places to shop (if that’s your thing) are especially impressive.

For example, diagonal from Whole Foods, is a store called Diptyque, selling candles. I actually went in recently (with my girlfriend). They had some very nice things for sale. I think Williamsburg and Soho are the only neighborhoods in New York City which might have such a high-end store.

I didn’t buy anything at Diptyque, but semi-recently, I did buy a new pair of shoes at the local Vans store. This morning, I noticed a Google store near the subway stop, too. (We also have an Apple store).

There’s a new construction side right outside of the L train entrance on Bedford avenue with a picture that shows what’s to come, which looks like it’s going to be another small retail strip. I can’t help but wonder: we already have every possible store here — what other retail could come? (Why can’t this be zoned for housing — don’t we need more spaces for people to live in this city?)

I don’t participate much in the commerce in the area, but I do like the convenience of it. We have a great dining scene. I have four grocery stores in my immediate vicinity. I know it’s not Central Park, but I like McCarran Park. I also like how the neighborhood feels just a bit quieter than Manhattan, but that it’s just a quick subway ride if I do want to leave Brooklyn.

North Williamsburg is a nice place to live. The convenience and amenities and stores are enough to justify the high price of renting or buying an apartment in the neighborhood. If you want to invest in the area — I’d highly recommend it.

Need some real estate help in the area? Renting, selling? Keep me in mind.
