If you’re familiar with the real estate scene in Bushwick, then you may have heard of the large, amenity-filled luxury buildings near the Myrtle-Broadway JMZ stop: the Denizen Bushwick, and the Rheingold. Both have around 1000 apartments, and each have amenities that range from traditional, like a rooftop and courtyard, to non-traditional, like a small bowling alley, golf simulator, and a pool at the Denizen. Both buildings also host events for their tenants.

Recently, I showed an apartment in Williamsburg to someone who asked for some other recommendations on where to live (they didn’t like the one I was showing them – too small and too close to the above-ground train). I suggested the Denizen. Some people aren’t sure if they want to live in a large building with events and unusual amenities – it can sort of feel like an adult dorm room.
But I actually lived for a year at the Denizen from October 2019-October 2020, in a two bedroom apartment with another roommate, during the height of Covid — and I had a great time.
Why? First of all, we had a pretty good apartment. It wasn’t a big space — but it had a great, bright living room, and the bedrooms were also okay, (I had the better one, though — my bedroom was on the corner of the building, with floor to ceiling windows on two sides of the room and two big closets). The apartment also had an in unit washer / dryer, central air, and a dishwasher.

I liked the amenities and the social aspect of the building. For $75 extra per month, residents get access to an “amenity package,” which includes getting to go to the events, as well. I remember a holiday brunch that my roommate and I went to in December 2019, with an all-you-can-eat buffet of eggs, waffles, etc, where we met other people in the building. After, we continued to hang out on the rooftop, and then went to another person’s apartment. I was 29 at the time, but I can’t deny that I enjoyed the college-y feel of the whole thing.
While I appreciate the privacy of being in my apartment, I did appreciate the community at the Denizen, especially during the Pandemic. It was nice to meet people in the lounge, or the roof, and I liked walking into the lobby of the building and saying hi to people I knew.
Some people do complain about the location of the Denizen— there’s not a ton of commerce right around the building, but it’s a manageable walk to Jefferson Street, one of the main drags in Bushwick.
So if you’re in the market for a new apartment on the north end of Brooklyn — I’d recommend checking out these buildings. I don’t know as much about the Rheingold, next door to the Denizen, but I’ve heard similar, (mostly good), things.
