Exploring Mexico City

Recently, I was lucky enough to travel to Mexico City — I went with my girlfriend to a wedding (her friend’s wedding).

This was not my first time in Mexico City — my girlfriend lived there for a few years after college and had taken me before.

I have to be honest —I wasn’t wowed the first time I traveled there. I guess I’m partial — I’m from New York City and have lived here for a long time. Sometimes I sort of feel like all cities – no matter where I am – feel the same (this might be a ridiculous perspective — but hey, that’s how I feel). Sometimes I sort of want to, like, be in the middle of nowhere — where it’s so different from being in the middle of the big city.

While I wasn’t impressed by Mexico City on previous trips, I really enjoyed it on this one.
We spent most of our time in Condesa and Roma — these are the big neighborhoods for tourists. But we also went to a neighborhood called Juarez for a little (where the wedding was).

There’s a great buzz in Condesa and Roma — a lot of people walking around, great places to eat, etc. There’s a big park in the middle of Condesa filled with people — it was like going to Prospect Park in the middle of the summertime (the weather is pretty nice there consistently — the elevation is 7000 square feet — it’s never too hot or too cold).

Maybe random thought: I was also impressed with the amount of trees in both of these neighborhoods. Sure, there are some trees on the sidewalks in NYC, but too often I find myself writing the words “tree-lined” on real estate advertisements for my job — like having a tree on your block is something different and marketable.

Roma and Condesa are filled with trees — sometimes I found myself wanting to find a sunny spot on the sidewalk because I felt like I was in the shade so much. Not that this is a bad thing — having trees is good — it keeps city temperatures low, right?

The dining scene is also great — just as good as NYC (maybe better — maybe another unpopular take).

It’s nice traveling — now back to work so I can feel okay about taking my next trip.
