I’m fortunate to have family to celebrate the holidays with who live in the NYC tristate area — for Thanksgiving this year, we traveled to the Catskills and stayed at a house in Fleischmanns, New York.

It’s a small, rural mountain town (actually it’s considered a “village,” according to some websites I found online about it), about forty minutes from Woodstock, NY. If you’ve spent some time upstate, you might know that Woodstock is sort of a hub in the area, with neat shops and lots of foot traffic. But Fleischmanns is about a forty minute drive from there, along a road which weaves between mountains — it’s a really cool and pretty area and the views of the mountains are pretty breathtaking.

In Fleischmanns, a few of us stayed at a house on top of a hill that was very isolated . We saw some houses on the way up to it, but from the immediate front yard of the house, we could not see any other homes – just mountains.

When you spend all of your time in NYC, it’s a cool feeling to travel just a few hours and stay somewhere so rural.

We also spent time driving through this area of New York (Delaware County). There are a lot of small towns separated by open country. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, we drove through a few towns, and also stopped in the town of Hobart (population of 441), which has its own “used book village.” There were four or five buildings which housed old and used bookshops (online it says there are actually seven used bookstores in the town). I didn’t buy anything – I’m already at capacity for my reading – but it was a cool experience.

I hope you all are having a great holiday season. I’m looking forward to 2024 and I hope to work with you in the future.
